Zinc sulfate heptahydrate is an inorganic salt and a common crystalline form of zinc sulfate. It serves as a critical source of bioavailable zinc ions (Zn2+), which are essential micronutrients involved in numerous physiological processes, including DNA synthesis, protein metabolism, and immune system regulation. In clinical medicine, it is primarily used to treat and prevent zinc deficiency. Beyond its role as a nutritional supplement, research has demonstrated its potential anti-inflammatory effects; for instance, in animal models of intracranial aneurysms, zinc administration has been shown to suppress aneurysm growth by inducing the expression of A20 (TNFAIP3), a protein that inhibits the NF-κB signaling pathway. It is also widely utilized in agricultural applications for crop biofortification and as a precursor in the green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles for antimicrobial and industrial uses.
