Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zingiber cassumunar, commonly known as Phlai in Thai, is a traditional medicinal herb belonging to the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family. It has been used extensively in Southeast Asian traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The primary bioactive compounds are essential oils and phenylbutanoids such as (E)-4-(3',4'-dimethoxyphenyl)but-3-en-1-ol. Mechanistically, Phlai exhibits anti-inflammatory effects likely through inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators and enzymes such as cyclooxygenase (COX), though precise molecular targets remain under investigation. In a phase I clinical study of oral Phlai capsules (200 mg/day for 12 weeks), the preparation was well-tolerated with minor side effects including somnolence and dry mouth that resolved over time[1]. No serious adverse events or significant laboratory abnormalities were observed.
