Zingiber ottensii essential oil is a natural extract derived from the rhizomes of the Zingiber ottensii Valeton plant, a member of the Zingiberaceae family native to Southeast Asia. Preclinical research indicates that this essential oil possesses potent anti-cancer properties, specifically demonstrated against human cervical cancer (HeLa) cells. Its mechanism of action involves the induction of apoptosis through the activation of caspase-3 and the downregulation of anti-apoptotic proteins like Mcl-1. Furthermore, the oil inhibits key survival and growth signaling pathways, including the Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) and Phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT cascades. It also suppresses the production of Interleukin-6 (IL-6), a cytokine that typically promotes tumor progression and chemoresistance in cervical malignancies. Safety evaluations have been conducted in zebrafish embryos and rat models, suggesting potential for further therapeutic development.
