ZIO-102

ZIO-102 is an experimental organic arsenic compound that was in preclinical development by ZIOPHARM Oncology (now Alaunos Therapeutics) for the treatment of various cancers. It was developed as a follow-up to the company's lead organic arsenical, ZIO-101 (darinaparsin). Organic arsenicals are designed to deliver arsenic's cytotoxic effects to malignant cells with improved safety profiles compared to inorganic arsenic trioxide. The mechanism of action for this class typically involves the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential, generation of reactive oxygen species, and induction of apoptosis. However, ZIO-102 specifically has very little published data regarding its exact molecular structure or clinical potential, and development appears to have ceased in the mid-2000s.
