Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zione (OC-108) is an injectable sclerosing agent developed by Lequio Pharma in collaboration with Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma and J-Dolph Pharmaceutical for the treatment of internal hemorrhoids. It is a combination of aluminum potassium sulfate hydrate and tannic acid, a formulation commonly known as ALTA therapy. When injected into the hemorrhoidal tissue, the aluminum potassium sulfate induces a strong local inflammatory response and interrupts blood flow, leading to rapid shrinkage and hemostasis. The tannic acid component serves to mitigate excessive acute inflammation and tissue damage. Over time, the treatment results in persistent fibrosis, which promotes the adhesion and fixation of the hemorrhoidal mucosa to the underlying muscular layer, effectively resolving the prolapse. Approved in Japan in 2004, Zione is widely used as a non-surgical alternative to hemorrhoidectomy.
