Zirconium-89-labeled high-density lipoprotein (89Zr-HDL) is a PET imaging radiopharmaceutical designed to visualize and quantify the accumulation of HDL-like nanoparticles in tissues, particularly within the tumor microenvironment. It consists of the HDL mimetic CER-001, an engineered lipoprotein complex mimicking pre-beta high-density lipoproteins, radiolabeled with the positron-emitting isotope zirconium-89 via a desferrioxamine (DFO) chelator. The tracer leverages the natural affinity of HDL for macrophages, specifically targeting tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) through the scavenger receptor class B1 (SR-B1). It is primarily used as a noninvasive diagnostic tool to assess tumor uptake of HDL-based nanomedicines and to monitor macrophage-driven inflammation in conditions such as esophageal cancer and atherosclerosis.
