Overview
Zirconium chloride hydroxide is an inorganic compound with the formula ClHOZr. It is also known by several other names including zirconium chlorohydrate and zirconyl hydroxychloride. This compound has been used as an ingredient in topical antiperspirant products, often in combination with aluminum salts. Its primary function in these formulations is to reduce perspiration by physically blocking sweat glands when applied to the skin. There is no evidence of a specific molecular target or pharmacological mechanism of action beyond its physical effect on sweat gland ducts. Zirconium chloride hydroxide has been included in both approved and experimental drug groups but appears to be discontinued for pharmaceutical use[1][2][8].
