Overview
Zishui Daohuo is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula primarily used to treat symptoms associated with Yin deficiency and hyperactive fire, most notably perimenopausal syndrome and chronic insomnia. The formula typically comprises several herbal ingredients, including *Rehmannia glutinosa*, *Scrophularia ningpoensis*, *Ophiopogon japonicus*, *Phellodendron amurense*, and *Anemarrhena asphodeloides*. Its mechanism of action involves nourishing the Kidney Yin and sedating Heart fire, which translates in modern pharmacological terms to the modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis and the regulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and GABA. It is widely utilized in China as an alternative or complementary therapy to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for managing hot flashes, night sweats, and emotional instability during menopause.
