Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zitrolid is a branded generic macrolide antibiotic, specifically an azalide, developed and marketed by Valenta Pharmaceuticals. Its active ingredient is azithromycin. The drug exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, which inhibits RNA-dependent protein synthesis in susceptible organisms. Zitrolid is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including upper and lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis. It is also used for skin and soft tissue infections, otitis media, and certain sexually transmitted infections like uncomplicated urethritis and cervicitis. It is primarily marketed in Russia and neighboring regions.
