Ziverel is a mucosal protective agent formulated as an oral solution for the symptomatic relief and protection of the esophageal mucosa. It is a combination product containing hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, and poloxamer 407. The device functions by forming a bioadhesive barrier that coats the esophageal wall, shielding it from the abrasive effects of gastric acid and pepsin. Hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate are key components of the extracellular matrix that contribute to tissue repair and structural organization, while poloxamer 407 acts as a bioadhesive polymer to ensure the active ingredients remain in contact with the damaged mucosa despite the ingestion of food or liquids. It is primarily used for the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and the prevention or treatment of radiation-induced esophagitis in oncology patients.
