ZK037 is a preclinical-stage synthetic lung surfactant being developed by Lee's Pharmaceutical for the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature newborns. RDS is a condition characterized by a deficiency of natural pulmonary surfactant, which leads to high surface tension in the alveoli, resulting in lung collapse and respiratory failure. ZK037 is designed as a new-generation synthetic mimic of endogenous surfactant, typically comprising phospholipids and peptide analogues of surfactant proteins (such as SP-B or SP-C), to restore normal lung mechanics and improve oxygenation in affected neonates.
