Overview

ZL-3101 (also known as Fugan) is a novel, steroid-sparing topical ointment developed for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions, specifically atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Originally licensed by Zai Lab from GSK in 2016, the candidate was designed to provide an alternative to corticosteroid therapies for patients with mild to moderate eczema. In August 2018, Zai Lab announced the decision to discontinue the development of ZL-3101 for atopic dermatitis following the top-line results of a Phase IIA trial. The double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study enrolled 295 Chinese patients with mild to moderate subacute eczema and found that while the treatment was safe and well-tolerated, it failed to demonstrate a significant difference compared to placebo in the primary efficacy endpoint (change in Eczema Area and Severity Index score at day 21).
