ZMapp is an experimental biopharmaceutical medication composed of a cocktail of three chimeric monoclonal antibodies (c13C6, c2G4, and c4G7) designed for the treatment of Ebola virus disease. The antibodies are directed against the glycoprotein (GP) on the surface of the Ebola virus. Two components were originally developed at Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory and one at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases; optimization was performed by Mapp Biopharmaceutical. The drug is produced in *Nicotiana benthamiana* tobacco plants using a process called pharming[1][2]. Mechanistically, ZMapp confers passive immunity by neutralizing Ebola virus particles through binding to distinct regions on their glycoproteins—blocking viral entry into host cells and enhancing immune clearance[1][6][8]. Clinical trials have not demonstrated statistically significant efficacy over standard care due to underpowered studies or lack of effect compared to other agents[3][4].
