ZNF865 mRNA is an experimental gene therapy consisting of messenger RNA encoding the zinc finger protein 865 (ZNF865), encapsulated within lipid nanoparticles (LNPs). Developed by researchers at the University of Utah, this therapeutic approach targets degenerative disc disease (DDD) and associated chronic low back pain. ZNF865 has been identified as a critical regulator of the cell cycle, DNA damage repair, and cellular senescence, with its expression levels notably declining in aging and degenerating intervertebral discs. By delivering ZNF865 mRNA directly into the nucleus pulposus, the therapy aims to restore ZNF865 protein levels, thereby reversing the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), promoting cell proliferation, and potentially halting or reversing disc degeneration and its associated pain.
