Zoalene, also known as Dinitolmide, is a synthetic, non-ionophorous coccidiostat primarily used as a fodder additive for poultry, including chickens and turkeys, and domestic rabbits to prevent and control coccidiosis infections. It is a broad-spectrum anticoccidial drug effective against various Eimeria species. While its precise molecular mechanism is not fully elucidated, it is hypothesized to interfere with critical metabolic pathways within the Eimeria parasite. Zoalene specifically targets the early stages of the Eimeria life cycle, particularly the first-generation schizonts, disrupting their metabolic processes and inhibiting their growth and replication. It also has an inhibitory effect on the sporulation process of oocysts. A notable characteristic of Zoalene is its ability to permit a degree of parasite cycling, which facilitates the development of natural immunity in the host birds.
