zolpidem Viatris

Zolpidem Viatris is a generic formulation of the non-benzodiazepine hypnotic zolpidem, an imidazopyridine derivative. It functions as a selective positive allosteric modulator of the GABA-A receptor, specifically targeting the alpha-1 subunit (formerly known as the omega-1 receptor). While its primary clinical use is the short-term treatment of insomnia, it has been the subject of extensive research by the Coma Science Group at the University of Liège and CHU de Liège for its paradoxical effects in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC). In a subset of patients in vegetative or minimally conscious states, zolpidem can temporarily restore cognitive and motor functions, a phenomenon hypothesized to result from the inhibition of the globus pallidus interna, thereby releasing the thalamus from chronic inhibition (the mesocircuit model). Additionally, it has been investigated for treating acquired visual impairments, such as cortical blindness, following neurological injury.
