Overview

The zoonotic influenza vaccine (H5N1) (surface antigen, inactivated, adjuvanted) is a monovalent, egg-derived vaccine designed to provide active immunization against the H5N1 subtype of Influenza A virus. Developed by CSL Seqirus in collaboration with institutions such as the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), it is intended for use in individuals at risk of exposure to avian influenza (bird flu) to prevent zoonotic transmission and provide pre-pandemic protection. The vaccine contains purified hemagglutinin and neuraminidase surface antigens from an H5N1-like strain. It utilizes the MF59C.1 adjuvant, an oil-in-water emulsion, to enhance the immune response, particularly the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin. It is typically administered via intramuscular injection and is authorized for use in the European Union under the brand name Aflunov.
