Overview
Zopiclone is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic agent from the cyclopyrrolone class, primarily used for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults. It acts as a positive allosteric modulator at the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptor complex, binding to the benzodiazepine site and enhancing GABAergic neurotransmission. This results in sedative, anxiolytic, muscle relaxant, and anticonvulsant effects similar to those of benzodiazepines. Zopiclone is molecularly distinct from benzodiazepines but shares an almost identical pharmacological profile.
