Zorecimeran (CVnCoV) is a first-generation, non-replicating messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine developed by CureVac for the prevention of COVID-19. It utilizes lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology to deliver mRNA encoding the full-length SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Unlike some other mRNA vaccines, zorecimeran used unmodified RNA. Despite reaching Phase 3 clinical trials, the candidate demonstrated a disappointing 48% overall efficacy against COVID-19 of any severity, which the company attributed to the prevalence of multiple virus variants during the trial period. Consequently, CureVac withdrew the vaccine from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) regulatory approval process in October 2021 to focus on second-generation mRNA vaccine candidates developed in collaboration with GSK.
