Overview

A live attenuated vaccine developed by the Beijing Chaoyang District Centre for Disease Control and Prevention for the prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) in adults aged 50 years and older. The vaccine utilizes a weakened form of the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) to stimulate a robust immune response, specifically targeting the decline in cell-mediated immunity associated with aging. By boosting VZV-specific T-cell levels, the vaccine aims to prevent the reactivation of latent VZV from the sensory ganglia. Clinical development has progressed through Phase 1 and Phase 2 trials in China, evaluating the safety and immunogenicity of various viral titers ranging from 4.3 to 5.0 lgPFU.
