Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Herpes Zoster Vaccine, Live (often referred to by the brand name GanWei in the context of Chinese development) is a live-attenuated vaccine designed to prevent herpes zoster (shingles) in adults. Developed by Changchun BCHT Biotechnology Co., Ltd., it was the first domestically produced shingles vaccine approved in China (January 2023) for individuals aged 40 years and older. The vaccine utilizes a live-attenuated Oka strain of the Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV). By stimulating VZV-specific T-cell responses, it helps maintain viral latency and reduces the risk of shingles and postherpetic neuralgia. It is administered as a single-dose subcutaneous injection, providing a more accessible alternative to recombinant subunit vaccines in certain markets. Historically, Merck's Zostavax was the first global live-attenuated zoster vaccine, though it has been largely superseded by recombinant options in many Western countries.
