Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zoviramin is an oral suspension formulation of the synthetic purine nucleoside analogue acyclovir, developed and marketed by Amin Pharmaceutical. It is indicated for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections (including cold sores), varicella-zoster virus infections (such as chickenpox and shingles), the prevention of recurrent herpes simplex, and prophylaxis in immunocompromised patients. Acyclovir is selectively converted to its active triphosphate form by viral thymidine kinase and cellular kinases. Acyclovir triphosphate then acts as a competitive inhibitor of viral DNA polymerase and is incorporated into the growing viral DNA chain, leading to premature chain termination and inhibition of viral replication.
