ZQMT is a traditional Chinese patent medicine (TCPM) primarily investigated for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), including both neovascular (wet) and dry forms. It is often used as a complementary therapy alongside standard anti-VEGF treatments like ranibizumab. Mechanistically, ZQMT has been shown to increase the expression of CX3CR1 in CD4+ T cells and may involve the modulation of CCL2, which helps alleviate retinopathy and reduce retinal lesions, hemorrhage, and fluid. Clinical studies suggest that the combination of ZQMT and ranibizumab is non-inferior to ranibizumab alone in improving visual acuity while significantly reducing the frequency of necessary intravitreal injections, thereby easing the financial burden on patients. Additionally, the name ZQMT has been used in a separate discovery context to refer to a series of oxindole-derived small molecule TRPA1 antagonists (e.g., ZQMT-10) being researched for analgesic activity in pain management.
