ZTx103 is a preclinical-stage small molecule therapeutic being developed by Zehna Therapeutics for the treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD), metabolic indications, and chronic weight management. The drug is part of Zehna's platform targeting the gut-heart axis, specifically the microbial metabolic pathway that generates trimethylamine (TMA). TMA is a precursor to trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a gut-microbiota-derived metabolite associated with increased risks of atherosclerosis, heart failure, and metabolic dysfunction. ZTx103 is designed to inhibit the gut microbial enzymes responsible for TMA production, thereby lowering systemic TMAO levels. This approach aims to mitigate the pro-inflammatory and pro-atherogenic effects of TMAO without the use of traditional antibiotics, representing a novel strategy for managing chronic metabolic and cardiovascular conditions.
