Overview

Zuo Gui Wan is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula developed in the Ming dynasty by physician Zhang Jiebin. It is designed to nourish kidney yin, supplement essence (jing), and boost marrow. The formula contains eight main ingredients—prepared rehmannia root (Shu Di Huang), Chinese yam rhizome (Shan Yao), goji berry (Gou Qi Zi), cornelian cherry fruit (Shan Zhu Yu/Shan Yu Rou), cyathula root or achyranthes root (Chuan Niu Xi/Niu Xi), dodder seed (Tu Si Zi), deer antler glue or antler slices/powder/gelatin (Lu Jiao/Lu Jiao Jiao), and tortoise plastron or turtle shell glue/gelatin/plastron powder/extracts (Gui Ban/Gui Ban Jiao). Zuo Gui Wan is primarily used for symptoms associated with kidney yin deficiency and depletion of essence—such as lower back pain, weak knees, dizziness, insomnia, night sweats, dry mouth/throat, fatigue with dry mouth, diminished sexual vitality or reproductive function issues. In TCM theory it helps restore energetic balance by nourishing yin and strengthening jing; it may also be used for certain gynecological conditions like irregular menstruation due to its effect on kidney/liver systems[1][2][4][5][7].
