Overview

Zuojin Wan is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula first recorded in 1481 AD and widely used for digestive system disorders. It consists of two herbal ingredients—Rhizoma Coptidis (Huang Lian) and Fructus Evodiae (Wu Zhu Yu)—typically combined in a 6:1 ratio. The formula is designed to "clear Liver Heat," "quench liver-fire," regulate stomach function, direct rebellious Qi downward, and relieve pain. In TCM terms, it addresses patterns such as Stomach Qi stagnation or Liver Qi invading the Stomach; from a Western perspective, it is used for conditions like gastritis, acid reflux, heartburn, epigastric pain, nausea, and related gastrointestinal symptoms[4][5][8]. Recent studies have also shown that Zuojin Wan can reverse multidrug resistance in colorectal cancer cells by decreasing P-glycoprotein levels and enhancing the efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents[1]. The main active components are berberine from Rhizoma Coptidis and evodiamine from Fructus Evodiae.
