Overview

Zuoqing San (ZQS) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula used primarily for the management of ulcerative colitis, particularly in patients with large intestine damp-heat syndrome. It consists of 31 principal chemical constituents identified through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The mechanism of action involves modulation of key inflammatory pathways and targets such as TNF, AKT1, IL6, IL1β, PTGS2, TP53, JUN, MMP9, CASP3, HIF1A, and BCL1. Pathway analysis indicates that Zuoqing San primarily impacts the TNF signaling pathway as well as NF-kB and IL-17 signaling pathways. Key active ingredients like oxymatrine and cynarin have demonstrated high affinity for TNF and IL1β respectively in molecular dynamics simulations[2]. Clinical studies have shown favorable outcomes in treating sigmoid ulcerative colitis with Zuoqing San[2][1].
