Overview

Zuragen (AAT-023) is a non-antibiotic antimicrobial and antithrombotic catheter lock solution developed by Ash Access Technology. It is specifically designed to prevent catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) and maintain catheter patency in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who require tunneled central venous catheters for hemodialysis. The solution is a combination of taurolidine, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that prevents biofilm formation by reacting with bacterial cell wall components, and heparin, an anticoagulant that enhances the activity of antithrombin III to prevent thrombus formation within the catheter lumen. In the pivotal Phase 3 AZEPTIC trial, Zuragen demonstrated a significant reduction in CRBSI and bacteremia events compared to standard heparin locks, showing superior efficacy in maintaining catheter patency with a favorable safety profile.
