Overview

Zushima total coumarin is a standardized pharmaceutical extract derived from the bark or roots of *Daphne giraldii* Nitsche, a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine (Zushima). Developed by the Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research, this extract is enriched with bioactive coumarin compounds, including daphnetin and umbelliferone. It is primarily developed for the treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The drug exhibits significant anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties by inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and by modulating the NF-κB signaling pathway. These actions help to reduce joint pain, swelling, and inflammation, potentially mitigating the progression of joint damage.
