Drug intelligence / Profile preview
ZYN is a tobacco-free oral nicotine pouch product manufactured by Swedish Match, a subsidiary of Philip Morris International. It contains synthetic nicotine salt powder as its active ingredient, which is delivered through small, dissolvable pouches placed between the lip and gum. While not a pharmaceutical drug, ZYN is being studied by the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center as a potential harm reduction alternative to traditional smokeless tobacco for preventing tobacco-related carcinomas in high-risk populations, such as those in rural Ohio and Appalachia. In January 2025, the FDA granted marketing authorization for 20 ZYN products, concluding that they contain significantly lower levels of harmful constituents compared to cigarettes and traditional smokeless tobacco, although the agency noted this does not imply the products are safe.
