This enantiomer is the most potent and biologically active form, absorbed via skin, lungs, or digestive tract, and acts as an agonist of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the nervous system[4][3][6]. Pharmacologically, it is highly addictive and is both a substance of abuse and a component of smoking cessation therapies[5][3]. Cotinine, a primary nicotine metabolite, is widely used as a biomarker to monitor exposure.
