Target intelligence / Profile preview
The α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7 nAChR) is a homopentameric ligand-gated ion channel with high calcium permeability and rapid desensitization. It plays a crucial role in synaptic plasticity, neuroprotection, and inflammation regulation via the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. It is implicated in various neuropsychiatric disorders, inflammation, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer, making it a target for therapeutic interventions.
Activation leads to increased Ca²⁺ influx, modulation of neurotransmitter release, and regulation of synaptic plasticity. Also influences JAK2–STAT3 and AMPK–mTOR signaling pathways.
