The term β-cell-specific target refers to a therapeutic target specifically expressed on pancreatic beta cells, most notably associated with the drug candidate YN401 developed by Innogen Pharmaceutical (Guangzhou Innogen Pharmaceutical Group) [6, 14, 23]. In the context of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), this target is utilized to deliver agents that can simultaneously protect existing beta cells from autoimmune destruction, stimulate their proliferation to restore insulin production, and suppress the underlying autoimmune response [14, 31]. While the exact molecular identity of the target in Innogen's pipeline remains proprietary, the term is also used more broadly in scientific literature to describe highly specific beta-cell markers such as Zinc Transporter 8 (ZnT8), Preproinsulin (PPI), and GPR44 [2, 5, 9]. Drugs targeting these molecules aim to modify the course of diabetes by preserving and expanding functional beta-cell mass, potentially offering a disease-modifying alternative to lifelong insulin therapy [14, 33].
