β-Hematin polymerization is a critical biochemical process unique to malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp.) that enables them to detoxify free heme released during hemoglobin digestion. The enzyme converts free heme (ferriprotoporphyrin IX) into an insoluble crystalline form called β-hematin (hemozoin). Inhibition of this pathway leads to the accumulation of toxic heme, resulting in parasite death. Thus, it represents a validated drug target for antimalarial therapy.
