Unlike traditional therapeutic targets like receptors or enzymes, these biomarkers are not directly drugged to elicit a therapeutic effect; instead, they serve as indicators of the cellular state and disease progression. However, the methylation status of these biomarkers can be modulated by epigenetic therapies, such as DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) inhibitors like azacitidine and decitabine, which aim to restore normal gene expression patterns (NIH: StatPearls). In clinical practice, these 15-gene signatures are utilized to stratify patients into risk groups, predict survival outcomes, and monitor the efficacy of treatments.
