17-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 7 (HSD17B7) is a multifunctional enzyme of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase family, best known for its roles in *cholesterol biosynthesis* (as the mammalian ortholog of yeast Erg27p, catalyzing the reduction of zymosterone to zymosterol) and *steroid hormone metabolism* (notably the conversion of estrone to estradiol and inactivation of dihydrotestosterone)[2].
