Overview

The **23S ribosomal RNA** is a core, essential RNA molecule comprising the catalytic center (peptidyl transferase center) of the large (50S) subunit of bacterial ribosomes, including in *Cutibacterium acnes*. It is responsible for catalyzing peptide bond formation during protein synthesis and is fundamental to ribosomal structure and function[1][6][8]. Domain V forms the peptidyl transferase center, which is targeted by many antibiotics including macrolides, lincosamides, and others[1][8]. Mutations in specific regions of the 23S rRNA (notably domain V) confer resistance to several key antibiotics, making this molecule a validated and clinically important therapeutic target[1][4]. 23S rRNA also participates in ribosome assembly, tRNA positioning, and maintaining the fidelity of translation[2][5]. Detection of resistance-associated sequence changes in 23S rRNA is used as a biomarker for antibiotic resistance in clinical isolates of *C. acnes* and other bacteria.
