24-Dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR24)

Target
DHCR24
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Oxidoreductase, Endoplasmic reticulum membrane protein
01

Overview

24-Dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR24) is an FAD-dependent oxidoreductase residing in the endoplasmic reticulum, essential for the terminal reduction step in cholesterol biosynthesis—the conversion of desmosterol to cholesterol via reduction of the Delta-24 double bond on the sterol side chain. DHCR24 is implicated in protecting cells from oxidative stress and apoptosis. Mutations in DHCR24 cause desmosterolosis, a rare genetic disorder, and altered DHCR24 expression is associated with Alzheimer's disease and some cancers.
