The 26S proteasome non-ATPase regulatory subunit 1 (Rpn2/PSMD1) is the largest non-ATPase subunit of the 19S regulator "base" of the 26S proteasome. It is essential for proteasome assembly and stability, situated at the central base of the 19S regulatory particle (RP). Rpn2 is involved in substrate recognition, assembly of the RP, and structural support for protein degradation machinery. The 19S RP together with the 20S core forms the complete 26S proteasome, critical for regulated proteolysis of polyubiquitinated proteins, affecting processes such as cell cycle, apoptosis, and antigen presentation. Note: "Proteasome 26S subunit, non-ATPase 1" most commonly maps to PSMD1/Rpn2 in human nomenclature. If referring generically to any non-ATPase 26S subunit, specify the gene or UniProt entry for precise mapping.
