Overview

26S proteasome non-ATPase regulatory subunit 13 (PSMD13) is a non-ATPase component of the 19S regulator "lid" in the 26S proteasome, a large multicatalytic complex responsible for the ATP-dependent degradation of ubiquitinated proteins via a non-lysosomal pathway in eukaryotic cells. This protein plays an essential role in protein quality control, homeostasis, and regulated protein turnover, with downstream effects on processes including the cell cycle, apoptosis, DNA repair, and inflammation. The proteasome’s malfunction or dysregulation, including altered PSMD13 function/expression, is implicated in the pathogenesis of cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and inflammatory diseases. Although no drugs specifically target PSMD13 alone, proteasome inhibitors like bortezomib target the proteasome complex for anti-cancer and research purposes.
