Overview

2H-Tantalum disulfide (2H-TaS2) is a two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) characterized by its hexagonal crystal structure and metallic conductivity. Unlike semiconducting TMDCs such as molybdenum disulfide, 2H-TaS2 exhibits metallic properties and complex electronic states, including charge density waves and low-temperature superconductivity (Cava et al., 2013). In the field of nanomedicine, 2H-TaS2 flakes are not recognized as biological targets—such as receptors, enzymes, or transporters—but are instead investigated as functional materials for therapeutic applications. They are particularly noted for their strong absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, which allows them to serve as high-performance photothermal agents for the ablation of cancerous tumors (Liu et al., 2018). Additionally, their large surface-area-to-volume ratio makes them suitable platforms for surface functionalization, drug delivery, and biosensing applications. Despite their potential in research, 2H-TaS2 remains an inorganic material whose biological safety, long-term toxicity, and metabolic fate in humans have not been fully established.
