Overview

The 30S ribosomal protein is a component of the small (30S) subunit of prokaryotic ribosomes. The 30S subunit, along with the 50S subunit, forms the functional 70S ribosome responsible for translating mRNA into proteins in bacteria and archaea. The 30S subunit consists primarily of one molecule of 16S rRNA and 21 distinct proteins named S1 through S21. These proteins interact extensively with the rRNA, stabilizing its structure and contributing to its function. Its primary role is to ensure accurate translation by monitoring base-pairing between codons on mRNA and anticodons on tRNAs. Many antibiotics target bacterial translation machinery by binding directly to sites within or near key functional regions on either RNA or associated proteins in both small (30S) or large (50S) subunits.
