Overview

30S ribosomal protein S19 is a component of the small (30S) subunit of prokaryotic ribosomes. It plays a crucial role in the assembly and function of the ribosome, which is essential for protein synthesis in cells. It forms a complex with S13, which binds strongly to 16S ribosomal RNA. It is also involved as a late binder during assembly; its association is necessary for final maturation steps in forming functional 30S particles. The eukaryotic homolog RPS19 shares significant sequence conservation and similar functions but resides within the cytoplasmic "40S" small subunit instead. In humans, mutations in RPS19 cause Diamond–Blackfan anemia—a rare congenital disorder characterized by failure to produce red blood cells.
