Overview

30S ribosomal protein S4 is a highly conserved protein that plays a central role in the assembly and function of the small (30S) subunit of prokaryotic ribosomes. It is one of the primary RNA-binding proteins essential for initiating and organizing the assembly of the 30S subunit by binding directly to 16S rRNA. It acts as an assembly initiator, maintaining translational accuracy, and contributing to mRNA helicase activity. S4 also acts as a translational repressor and antiterminator, regulating the expression of other ribosomal proteins. Mutations in S4 can affect translational accuracy and antibiotic resistance.
