30S ribosomal protein S7 is a highly conserved component of the small (30S) subunit of prokaryotic ribosomes. It plays a central role in the assembly and function of the ribosome, which is responsible for decoding mRNA and synthesizing proteins within the cell. It is one of the primary rRNA-binding proteins, directly binding to 16S rRNA. It initiates assembly of the head domain of the 30S subunit. It also interacts with tRNAs at both aminoacyl-tRNA (A) and peptidyl-tRNA (P) sites during translation and regulates its own synthesis by binding to its own mRNA, thus acting as an autogenous translational repressor. Mutations in mitochondrial homologs can cause congenital sensorineural deafness as well as progressive hepatic and renal failure.
