Target intelligence / Profile preview
MRPL23 (39S ribosomal protein L23, mitochondrial) is a nuclear-encoded structural protein that forms part of the large 39S subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome), which mediates mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes are distinct from cytosolic and bacterial ribosomes in their high protein:RNA ratio (~75%), lack of 5S rRNA, and substantial sequence variability between species. MRPL23 is crucial for the correct assembly and operation of the mitoribosome but is not a direct target for drugs or therapeutic intervention. Rare disease associations have been noted, but its principal biological role is structural and translational within mitochondria
