MRPL32 contains a specialized domain that coordinates zinc ions via a conserved cysteine motif (CxxC-X9-CxxC), contributing both to folding and function[2][8]. Its proper processing and maturation are regulated by the m-AAA protease, which ensures that MRPL32 integrates correctly into the ribosome, influencing biogenesis and assembly of mitochondrial respiratory complexes[2][1]. MRPL32 is not an enzyme or a classical therapeutic target such as a receptor, transporter, or ion channel, and there are no drugs currently known to interact directly with it. Defects or dysregulation in MRPL32 may contribute to impaired mitochondrial protein synthesis, with potential secondary relevance in mitochondrial disorders[2][3].
