Target intelligence / Profile preview
The SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro), also known as 3C-like protease (3CLpro), is a cysteine hydrolase enzyme essential for the life cycle of SARS-CoV-2. It cleaves viral polyproteins pp1a and pp1ab to release nonstructural proteins required for viral replication. Inhibition of Mpro blocks viral replication, making it a prime target for antiviral drug development.
