Overview

40S ribosomal protein S10 (RPS10) is a component of the small (40S) subunit of cytoplasmic ribosomes, which are responsible for translating mRNA into protein in human cells. RPS10 belongs to the S10E family of ribosomal proteins and is involved in essential cellular processes such as protein synthesis, ribosome assembly, and RNA binding. In addition to its canonical role in the ribosome, RPS10 may also participate in regulation of cell division, chemical signaling pathways, and apoptosis. Mutations in RPS10 are causative for a subset of patients with Diamond–Blackfan anemia, a rare congenital disorder characterized by failure of red blood cell production and sometimes physical malformations. While RPS10 expression is altered in some cancers, it is not currently regarded as a therapeutic target or the direct molecular target of any known clinical drugs.
