Small ribosomal subunit protein uS19 (uS19)

Small ribosomal subunit protein uS19 is a highly conserved eukaryotic ribosomal protein that is a core component of the 40S small ribosomal subunit[2][5]. Also known as 40S ribosomal protein S15, uS19 is involved in several essential cellular functions. Its conserved globular domain helps form the head of the small ribosomal subunit, while a eukaryote-specific C-terminal extension directly participates in constructing the decoding site, impacting translational fidelity in a manner unique to eukaryotes[2]. uS19 is crucial for 40S ribosome maturation, interacting with assembly factors needed for nuclear export of pre-40S particles. Beyond ribosome biogenesis and translation, uS19 also has extra-ribosomal roles, most notably through regulation of the tumor suppressor p53 in the Mdm2/Mdmx-p53 pathway[2].
